Measure for Measure

Kate Mulgrew is the oldest of eight children from a traditional Irish American family. Mulgrew's father is a contractor and her mother is an artist. She accredits her parents for making her a self-confident woman.

In an interview with Working Mother she is quoted as saying "Coming from a large family, there was no question that I would help out around the house. Further, there was no question that if I wanted things, I went to work."

At seventeen, Mulgrew went to NYU, but left her junior year to actively pursue acting.

Mulgrew is the mother of two boys, Ian and Alec. The family lives together in Los Angeles. Like many working mothers, her job sometimes conflicts with her responsibilites to her children and this troubles her as she has mentioned in several interviews. However, she has also comes to realize that she, herself, must be fulfilled in order to be a good mother to her children. So, like working mothers everywhere she walks the tightrope that we must all walk.

Mulgrew was married for eleven years to Richard Egan. In 1993 they were divorced and she is currently married to Tim Hagan, a possible Senate hopeful for the Democratic Party in Ohio.
