From the age of two to just before her formative years, Gillian Anderson lived in London. As a teen, her family moved back to the United States. There, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she became the subject of ridicule because of her English accent.

Anderson was a rebellious teenager. She shocked her middle American town with her outrageous dress and spiked hair. She was arrested days before her high school graduation for trying to glue the school's doors shut.

Her transformation back to normalcy began when Anderson discovered community theater. Her interest continued and she soon earned a fine arts degree from the Goodman theater school of Drama at DePaul University.
